What is PSHE all about?

PSHE education advocates personal development by helping pupils to build their confidence, resilience and self-esteem. As a result, pupils build a strong foundation which underpins their personal development and provides them with the skills to effectively identify and manage risk, make informed choices and understand what influences their decisions.

What is RHE all about?

Relationships and Health Education (RHE) focusses on giving pupils the knowledge they need to make informed decisions about their wellbeing, health and relationships, and to build their self-efficacy. Health education focusses on equipping pupils with the knowledge they need to make good decisions about their own health and wellbeing. Through effective RHE teaching, children develop an understanding of healthy, respectful relationships, which focus on family and friendships, in all contexts, including online as well as developing an understanding of human sexuality.

Why do we teach PSHE?

It enables pupils to recognise, accept and shape their identities, to understand and accommodate difference and change, to manage emotions and to communicate constructively in a variety of settings. Through effective PSHE teaching, children develop an understanding of themselves, empathy and the ability to work with others, which will help pupils to form and maintain good relationships and ultimately develop the essential skills to enjoy and manage their lives.

How do we teach PSHE?

PSHE core concepts are taught once a week, or more if required. We implement a flexible strategic approach to PSHE teaching, to effectively meet the needs of each class and key stage, through this strategy we aim to:

• Hold school worships linked to our school values with integrated PSHE core themes.

• To teach PSHE core themes flexibly, via whole class discreet lessons, class discussions, group discussions & individual discussions.

• Promote PSHE learning through school displays and themed focus weeks.

Haughton St. Giles aim to engage pupils PSHE learning, along with the teaching of British Values and Spiritual, Moral, Social and Cultural development (SMSC), by providing a range of exciting and stimulating tasks, whereby pupils’ thinking is challenged through thought provoking questions and images, which leads to self & peer reflection, in-depth discussion, secure understanding and recognition of PSHE core concepts.
