Our Curriculum Overview

Our Curriculum

Intent

At Haughton St. Giles CE Primary Academy we aim to provide the children with a challenging, engaging and motivating curriculum which is broad, well balanced and above all stimulates the children to learn. Through a positive and caring environment, we provide the opportunity for every child to reach their full potential. We embrace our school Christian values and ensure all children are guided to work hard, stay focused and never give up on their dreams, allowing them to strive to become the very best they can be now and in later life.

Our aims:
  • To provide a broad and balanced curriculum which meets the requirements of the National Curriculum and engages our children.

  • To embed learning of knowledge and skills by using them in a range of lessons and contexts to build a broad knowledge base as they progress through school

  • To offer opportunities which challenge children to become confident learners who can achieve greater depth of understanding.

  • To support all children to make good progress from their starting points

  • To support every child to become a confident and enthusiastic reader with a love of books.

  • To ensure children have extra-curricular opportunities inside and outside school which enrich the curriculum

  • To promote our distinctive Christian Ethos and school values through high quality Collective Worship and our RE curriculum.

  • To embed teaching about British Values of democracy, the rule of law, individual liberty, mutual respect and tolerance of those of different faiths and beliefs throughout our teaching and daily life in school.

Implementation

At Haughton St. Giles Primary Academy we provide a broad and balanced curriculum which supports our children to develop their intellectual curiosity and become resilient lifelong learners. We empower our children by teaching a knowledge-rich curriculum with core skills revisited and embedded across the school.

We have designed a 2-year rolling curriculum which provides all children with a broad range of experiences throughout their school life and prepares them for their next step in learning and in later life. We are proud of our distinctive Christian ethos and this underpins our curriculum across the school. We ensure that through teaching the children about our Christian values we provide them with skills for life in Modern Britain.

Our curriculum provides children with opportunities to learn the core skills of reading, writing and mathematics in engaging contexts and has opportunities for them to apply these skills across a range of subjects. Through our wider curriculum, our pupils will be taught key knowledge and skills which will be embedded and developed further along their learning journey. Where appropriate, cross-curricular links have been established to broaden and deepen pupils’ knowledge, skills and understanding, enabling them to access and express their learning in a variety of ways.

Furthermore, in order to work collaboratively and share best practices, leaders across the academy support in the curriculum development and advancement of subject leaders at all levels.

Impact

Each term we assess children in all areas of the curriculum to measure the impact of our teaching on their outcomes. We ensure that our children make good progress from their starting points and teach in a way that encourages children to become independent and resilient learners who thrive on challenge. Our curriculum ensures that each pupil is equipped with a wealth of knowledge and skills, which coupled with their developed key character skills, will prepare them well for the next stages of their learning journey.
